【试卷原题】

Our washing machine needed to be fixed and we had called for a service person to mend it. The machine drum was making a lot of noise and the clothes were not being washed properly. The service man could only speak Spanish and it was a tough time for me to communicate with him. He was patient enough to let me know what was wrong with the machine and he conveyed the parts that were to be fixed. When the machine finally started working properly, I breathed a sigh of relief and asked about the service charge. The bill amount came to be around $41.3.

I quickly gave him a $50 note and requested the balance amount. When he searched his pocket and said that he had none, I went inside and started hunting for the exact change. All the time, at the back of my head I was scared that he might get his hands on something from the house. You see, there were expensive gadgets and jewels on the earrings stand hanging out there in the living room where he was waiting. And last time when I was getting my air conditioner fixed, I found my ring was lost. And the ring was from my grandma. The only guy that might take it was the service man, for we hadn't had any visitors. I even called him later but he said he did not see anything like a ring. I could feel from his voice that he was hiding something but I had no evidence of his stealing my ring.

My jewels were only a few steps from him and he could easily grab one without being noticed. I even kind of heard his steps in the hall.

In a hurry, I somehow fished out a $20 note, two separate $10 notes and the remaining tens. I rushed to the living room and immediately handed him the service charge. I wanted him to thank and leave but he stood there still.

Main idea of the given passage

This passage tells of the story of a service man and me. It goes like this: My washing machine is out of order and I turn to a service man for help. I offer him $50 as the service charge but he only charges $41.3. I go inside for the exact amount, leaving him alone in the living room. I am much concerned that my jewels there might get stolen by him.

Clues to continuation writing

Para 1: From “His expression confused me” and “Now I am recollecting the incident as I write”, We can expect that something out of ordinary should happen and the service man will do something out of my expectation. According to the positive ending principle, he should be an upright and honest man, just contrary to my suspicion, which will transform my former idea of service men.

Para 2: This part will mainly be soul-searching. From the experience I will learn something important and help erase my prejudice against service men especially men of low social status.

【我的下水作文】

His expression confused me. It was not gratitude, nor impatience, nor any expression I could expect. Then he reached into his pocket and produced a $50 note. It was only then that I realized what had happened. Shocked, ashamed and touched, I stood rooted to the ground, face red. A while ago my mind was packed with mean thoughts about him whereas he was so noble and honest. I opened my mouth but couldn’t manage a word. He smiled good-bye and disappeared into the street through my watery eyes. (87 words)

Now I am recollecting the incident as I write. All that happened came crowding in: my mean attitude, my suspicion of him stealing my jewels and his honesty with the $ 50. None of this failed to make my face burn. This experience taught me a valuable lesson and even transformed my outlook of the world. Everybody deserves respect and trust for his service and nobody is to be suspected for no reason regardless of the career. This will forever serve as a reminder for me. (75 words)

【官方范文】

His expression confused me. He handed out a $50 note and explained I gave it to him just now while I forgot. Taking a glimpse of the note, I was speechless with my tongue stuck in my mouth. A sense of embarrassment overwhelmed me and I literally felt like a fool. I managed to mumble a little sorry and took the $50 note from him. Sending him off, I closed the door, cursing myself for my evil ideas.

Now I’m recollecting the incident as I write. I wouldn’t have noticed that a huge amount was missing if he hadn’t pointed out my mistake. I just cannot help blaming myself for my thoughts at that time when I had imagined him stealing the gadgets or my jewels. Not only did he change my attitude to service men but he changed my attitude to the world that there are actually a whole lot of honest people out there to whom we need to show respect and trust.
