Haridwar: Hundreds test positive for Covid at Kumbh Mela


Hundreds of devotees, including nine top saints, have tested positive for Covid-19 in India's Haridwar city where huge crowds have gathered to participate in the Kumbh Mela festival.

More than three million Hindu devotees bathed in the Ganges river on Tuesday to mark one of the most auspicious days of the two-month-long festival. Millions are expected to repeat the ritual on Wednesday. India reported 184,372 new cases on Tuesday - its highest-daily spike yet.

AstraZeneca vaccine: Denmark stops rollout completely


Denmark has ceased giving the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid vaccine amid concerns about rare cases of blood clots, the first European country to do so fully. The move is expected to delay the country's vaccination programme by several weeks.

Drug watchdog the European Medicines Agency last week announced a possible link with clots but said the risk of dying of Covid-19 was much greater. Several European countries had previously briefly suspended the jab.

Daunte Wright shooting: Officer Kim Potter charged over killing


A white police officer who shot dead a black motorist in Minnesota has been charged with second-degree manslaughter, prosecutors say. Officer Kim Potter has been arrested and will be held in custody.

Mrs Potter says she shot Daunte Wright accidentally, having mistakenly drawn her gun instead of her Taser. Responding to the charges, the Wright family's lawyer Ben Crump said the killing was an "intentional, deliberate, and unlawful use of force".

Crypto firm Coinbase valued at more than oil giant BP


Cryptocurrency firm Coinbase, which runs a top exchange for Bitcoin and other digital currency trading, hit a market value of nearly $100bn in its stock market listing. Shares debuted on the Nasdaq at a price of $381 but later closed below $330.

The initial valuation put Coinbase ahead of many well-known firms, such as oil giant BP and key stock exchanges. The listing was seen as the latest step toward cryptocurrencies gaining wider acceptance among traditional investors.

Smuggler jailed over New Zealand avocado meth plot


A man whoimported 113 kilograms of methamphetamine, hidden inside boxes of avocado pulp, has been sentenced toalmost 11 years in prison in New Zealand.

Victor Martos, a 38-year-old Mexican national, was convicted of importing methamphetamine and possessing the Class A drug for supply. Martos appeared at theHigh Court at Aucklandtoday, where Justice Christian Whata sentenced him to 10 years and seven months' imprisonment.

Barack Obama's Kenyan stepmother dies


The stepmother of former US President Barack Obama has died. Kezia Obama, the mother of Malik and Auma Obama, died on Tuesday.

The cause of her death has not been disclosed but Kenya's Standard newspaper says she died in the UK. Kezia Obama's daughter Auma, who enjoys a close relationship with former President Obama, said she was numb after losing her.

St Vincent volcano: UN warns humanitarian crisis will last months


The humanitarian crisis caused by volcanic eruptions on the Caribbean island of St Vincent will last for months, a UN official has warned. Didier Trebucq said nearby islands including Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda could also be badly affected.

He said the UN wassetting up an international funding appeal. About 20,000 people have been evacuated from their homes since La Soufrière volcano began erupting last Friday.

Toshiba president steps down amid $20bn buyout bid


Toshiba's chief executive resigned on Wednesday amid controversy over a $20bn buyout bid from a private equity firm, CVC Capital Partners. A statement from the Japanese conglomerate gave no reason for Nobuaki Kurumatani's resignation.

However, he had faced criticism from activist shareholders over the bid from CVC, his former employer. Toshiba's shares surged on reports that more suitors were planning offers on the electronics giant.
