As expected,soil moisture was significantly higher inambient than in drought plots (P = 0.03, Fig. 2A). Moreover, soil moisture wassignificantly higher in winter (June 2018) comparedto summer (January 2018) (P < 0.0001), while the drought effect was largerin winter than in summer causing a significant drought × season interaction effect (P = 0.04). Across both season, drought significantly increased microbial CUE (P =0.001, Fig. 2B). In contrast, we observed significantlyhigher CUE in winter when soils weregenerally wet compared to summer when soilswere dry (P < 0.0001, Fig. 2B).
Season had significant effects onmajor microbial groups such as fungi, bacteria, and actinobacteria(总). Fungal PLFAs were highest in summer andlowest in winter (P < 0.0001, Fig. 3A). In contrast, bacterial and actinobacterialPLFAs were highest in winter and lowest in summer (P < 0.01, Fig. 3Band D). Consequently, the fungi: bacteriaratio was significantly higher in summer than in winter (P < 0.0001, Fig. 3C). We observed no maineffects of drought on any of themicrobial groups, but the fungi: bacteriaratio increased with drought in summer, and decreasedwith drought in winter, causing asignificant drought × season interaction (P = 0.01, Fig. 3C).
We observed no significant main or interactive effects ofdrought on any of the four EEs (both hydrolytic, Hy and oxidative, Ox)activities we measured (Fig. 5). However, both β-glucosidase (BG, Hy) and peroxidase (PER,Ox) activity were significantly higher insummer than in winter.
