Imagine you re watching a runaway trolley barreling down the tracks straight towards five workers who can t escape. You happen to be standing next to a switch that will divert the trolley onto a second track. Here s the problem. That track has a worker on it, too, but just one. What do you do? Do you sacrifice one person to save five?
This is the trolley problem, a version of an ethical dilemma that philosopher Philippa Foot devised in 1967.

Now take a look at this picture
Imagine you are walking a trolley track
And all of a sudden you see a trolley out of control
going toward five workers
If you flip the switch beside you
The five workers are going to be saved
And the one on the side track is going to be killed
but if you don t the innocent one will leave unharmed
And the five are going to be killed
Now would you flip the switch
Keep your answers
Now consider another suddenly different one
you are on a foot bridge
Overseeing five workers
are about to be run over by a trolley
If you give the fat man beside you a little push
He will definitely die
but his fat body will leave the five workers unharmed
What will you do?
Usually only two ways of thinking
about the trolley problem
The first is that you should save as many as you can
If you think this way
Then you re definitely agree with the utiltarain method
Utilitarian’s think
that you should do the most amount good
for the biggest amount of people
So that means
you should save the five workers and sacrifice one
Meanwhile the other way is that
you should not interact the affair
And just morally wrong for you to choose
to end somebody s life
Even it means saving five
If you think in this way
Then you agree with the deontological perspective
I wasn t sure how I felt about this
But I was really interested in it
So I decide to do my own survey
I printed out that case one
And handed it out to my classmates and teachers at school
I asked them will they flip the switch
and why
It turns out that 87% of people
Agree with the utilitarian way
saying it s completely fine
for you to choose to save five
Just by flipping a switch
However I am not the only
that interested in it
This is a classical problem studied by many
Research shows that in case one
most people agree with the utilitarian way
just like the teachers and classmates that I surveyed on
But in the case two
most people tend to agree with the deontological perspective
saying it s not fine for you
to killed a stranger and push him
while against saving five
however we don t understand
Why
为什么
Whe have different outcomes
Even though we are still asking you
to save one or to save five
and it s turns out
that Evolution has made us social creatures
and that s all
