It’s been a month since Tibetan boy Ding Zhen firsthitsocialmedia, but discussions over him and every aspect of his life have hardlystopped since. Initially, it seemed he was going to be one of China’s many gone-before-you-know-it internet stars—clearly, he is not.

Ding Zhen, a 20-year-old horse-racinglover, comes from Litangcounty, a Tibetan area of Sichuan province.Largelybecause of his goodlooksand innocent(天真的)smile—and thescenery in that area—he’stakenthe internetby stormin recentweeks.With only 12 posts himself, Ding’sWeibo account hasracked uptonearly 2 million followersin three weeks.

So why has hegotten so much attention fromthe internet,not just for a day, but a whole month? It all started from a seven-second videoposted on Douyin, China’s domestic version ofTikTok.Hewasseenon his waytobuy instant noodlesand then appeared in a livestream(直播)hosted by the photographer where he seemed veryshy and didn’t speak Mandarin (普通话) fluently. Enthusiastic comments such as, “Socute! His clear and innocent eyes are like a stream ofspringwater,” and “His smile melted my heart,”floodedsocial media. Netizens (网民们) calledhim a“sweet and wild boy” for his unpolished look and shy smile.

Generally speaking,the next step for an overnight internet celebrity (名人) is to sign a contract with a management company andstart selling goods. But Ding found a different route.He accepted a joboffer from the local government and became the tourism ambassador (旅游大使) of Litang county. A three-minute short filmThe World ofDing Zhenwas launched days later as a promotion for Dingas wellas his hometown. As a result, the number of searches for Litang sharplyincreased by620%in 10 days.

The move even sparked(引发)awar among various departments of culture and tourism in different regions.Since Ding is Tibetan and he once said that he wanted to visit Lhasa, netizensnaturallyassociatehimwithTibet.
