Step three：分析句子

①句子主干：They are the possessions of……, and they are essential to practices

②they指代上文的freedom and dignity，翻译时需还原

③in which引导定语从句，修饰practices

④从句中有两个被动结构，is held responsible for his conduct和given credit for his achievements，翻译时可以主动化翻译，翻译为汉语的主动句
